Abstract: In this work the Mbssbauer effect on the 21.6 keV $\gamma$-transition of $^{151}$Eu has been used to investigate the influence of a high magnetic field up to 12.8 T on the mixed valent compounds EuCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and EuPd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. The following results of our experiments are of particular interest : 1) In both compounds a high magnetic field of B$_{o}$ = 12.8 T induces a small valence shift towards divalent europium. This valence shift is explained in the frame of the ionic interconfigurational fluctuation model. 2) In EuPd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ an anomaly of the quadrupole interaction was found in the temperature region 130 < T < 180 K where the valence changes rapidly. Probably, this effect is mainly due to an admixture of 4f-contributions to the conduction band states. 3) Beside the main resonance line an additional satellite line was observed in all samples. Since the lattice parameters and the stoichiometry do not reveal any anomalous behaviour it is supposed that a local disorder in the lattice could cause this additional line.
